Wednesday evening, Bellisio Foods in
affiliation with the Foundation for Appalachian
Scholarship Committee, announced their latest
scholarship recipients complete with a small reception
in their honor.
A total of five winners were named with
scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $4,000.
Marianne Campbell, the FAOS Committee
Chair, announced each winner by giving a brief
description of where they intend to go to college, or
are already enrolled, as well as their accomplishments
during high school.
Chairman and CEO of Bellisio Foods, Joel
Conner, awarded each recipient with a certificate of
recognition for their outstanding leadership abilities.
The first recipient was Amanda Beers of
Vinton County who graduated from River Valley High
School. She is currently attending Berea College in
Kentucky as a junior pursuing a career in nursing. She
plans to be a pediatric nurse upon graduation in 2010.
Her grandmother, Rose Beers, is an employee of Bellisio
Foods. Beers received a $2,500 scholarship.
Jonathan Bryan Trent graduated from
Jackson High School in 2007. He is currently attending
the University of Rio Grande majoring in social work. He
will be a sophomore in the fall so is scheduled to
graduate in 2011. His mother, Kathy Trent, his
grandmother, Freda Molihan, and his aunt, Carla Moore,
are all employees of Bellisio Foods. Trent received a
$2,500 scholarship.
Samantha Elliott graduated from Wellston
High School in 2007 and is now a student at Ohio
University majoring in education. After earning her
Bachelor's Degree in education, she plans to pursue a
PhD in education as her goal is to teach high school
math and science. Her mother, Watcharee Elliott, works
for Bellisio Foods. She received a $2,500 scholarship.
Brooke Sollars just graduated from Jackson
High School and plans to attend The Ohio State
University majoring in mathematics. After completing her
education she plans to join the United States Navy as a
career. Her mother, Avonelle Sollars, works for Bellisio
Foods. She received a $3,000 scholarship.
Christine Highland is a resident of
Piketon and a graduate of Piketon High School. She plans
to attend Shawnee State University and pursue a nursing
career. She hopes to become a neo-natal nurse
practitioner and return to Pike County. Her grandmother,
Flora Marie Detillion is an employee of Bellisio Foods.
Highland received a $4,000 scholarship.
Conner explained that they would like to
have more applicants for the scholarships in the future
as there were only 25 during this round. A stipulation
in the process states they can only give scholarships
away to 25 percent of the total number of applicants,
which limited what could be awarded this time.
"Our goal is to raise as much as we can
and give out as much as we can," Conner stated.
Bellisio Foods plans to have another money
raising event in September, so Conner said they may do
another round of scholarships in the fall, but that is
not definite at this time.
